What Is Prayer?

  • “It is the act of addressing supplication to God.

  • “It is the offering up to the Supreme Being of adoration, confession, supplication, and thanksgiving.

  • “It is the practice of communion with God in devotional address, worship, and supplication.” [Webster]

It’s Object:

1. To obtain salvation.
    1 Chronicles 28:9; 2 Chronicles 7:14; Romans 10:12, 13; Joel 2:32; Acts 2:21.

2. To obtain healing.
    James 5:13-16; 2 Kings 20:1-6.

3. To obtain grace and strength.
    Hebrews 4:16; Ephesians 3:12; James 4:10; Isaiah 40:31.

4. To obtain power.
    Mark 9:29; Isaiah 40:29-31; Luke 24:29.

5. To obtain blessings from God.
    Deuteronomy 4:7; John 16:23, 24.

6. To avert evil.
    Jeremiah 26:19; Matthew 6:13; 26:41; Luke 22:40, 46.

7. To preserve peaceful government.
    Jeremiah 29:7; 1 Timothy 2:1-3.

8. To extend thanksgiving.
    1 Thessalonians 1:2; Philippians 4:6

9. To fulfill the will of God.
    1 Timothy 2:8, 1-3.

For Whom Prayer is to be offered:

1. We are to pray for ourselves.
    Job 22:27; 33:26; Psalm 55:16; Jude 20, 21.

2. We are to pray for the Brethren.
    1 Thessalonians 1:2; Ephesians 1:16; Philippians 4

3. We are to pray for our enemies.
    Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27, 28

4. We are to pray on behalf of nations.
    Psalm 85:1-7; Daniel 9:3-19

5. We are to pray for our leaders.
    Ezra 6:10; 1 Timothy 2:1, 2

6. We are to pray for all men.
    1 Timothy 2:1
