Twelve Duties of Fathers (Parents)
Deuteronomy 6

1. We are to Love God Wholeheartedly. [Matthew 22:36-40]

What an example it would be to our children if we really loved the Lord with all our heart. If we loved Christ so much that no one would have anything bad to say about our way of living. Christians are not to love just in church or just fellow Christians.

We shall love our neighbor as ourselves. Do we reach out to our neighbors with Christ’s love? Christ’s love in our heart is looking for a way to minister to our neighbor. It doesn’t matter what the neighbor’s lifestyle may be we are to love them.

2. We are to have God’s Word in our hearts. Deu 6:6

What a blessing we can be to our children if they see us filling our hearts with the Word of God.

The Bible says,
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psa 119:11 En mi corazón he guardado tus dichos, Para no pecar contra ti.

If we have our hearts filled with the Word of God, Don’t Worry, it will be transferred to our children. They will follow the Lord.

Ninety percent of children, who start smoking, drinking or even swearing, learn to do so in the home. It is reasonable to think that if they see you living according to the Word of God, in the home, they will follow that example.

3. We are to teach God’s Word, diligently, to our children. [Deut. 6:7; Deut. 6:20]

Fathers should play a major part in the instruction of their children but that does not seem to be the case today. Many fathers do not take the proper Scriptural place in the home.

The Bible even gives instructions to sons/daughters to listen to the instruction of the father. How can they listen to instructions of a father when it is not given or only given in anger?

Proverbs 1:8
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Proverbs 1:8

Proverbs 13:1
A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

Proverbs 13:1

The Bible even speaks to those Children who would despise the father’s instruction. Proverbs 15:5

The Bible speaks destruction to those who mock instruction.

Proverbs 30:17

(Proverbs 20:20 he is in darkness; and in Exodus 21:17 they were put to death).

We can be glad that God doesn’t do that today. Several of us might be in trouble.

4. We are to talk of the Word of God when sitting in the house, walking by the way, lying down, or rising up. [Deut. 6:7]

5. Bind them for a sign upon the hand and on the forehead. [Deut. 6:8]

6. Write them upon the door posts and gates. [Deut. 6:9]

7. Remember God and serve Him in prosperity and success. [Deut. 6:10; Deut. 6:11; Deut. 6:12]

Many times people only call on God during the hard times but when they prosper they forget God and His work. We must not forget the God who brought us out of bondage.

8. Fear the Lord and serve Him, and swear by His name. [Deut. 6:13]

9. Detest Idols. [Deut. 6:14; Deut. 6:15]

10. Refrain from tempting God. [Deut 6:16]

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

11. Diligently keep the commandments, testimonies, and statutes of God.

Deu 6:17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.

12. Do that which is right and good in the sight of God and man.

Deu 6:18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,
